CHESTER FC's pre-season friendly with Rhyl on Saturday has been cancelled after intervention from North Wales Police.
The Police moved to have the match scratched after trouble broke out at a match between Chester and Colwyn Bay last Saturday.
Commenting on the cancellation, chief superintendent Andy Williams said: "The events at Colwyn Bay
were unacceptable. Police resources from across North Wales were called
in to deal with groups of people causing violence both before and during
the game.
"I deliberately do not refer to these individuals as ‘football fans’
and I recognise that the majority of Chester FC followers are law
abiding people who simply want to watch a game.

"However, we are not willing to tolerate a repeat of despicable
behaviour by a minority of mindless thugs intent on causing harm to
people and property.
"Intelligence received since Saturday suggests that had the game in
Rhyl gone ahead, then further problems would have occurred. To this end
we made a request to Rhyl FC that their match against Chester FC on
Saturday is cancelled.
"We are proud of a close relationship with the football club and
they unreservedly agreed to this request. Investigations are now
progressing in respect of the disorder at Colwyn Bay and the community
can have confidence that any individuals identified causing the problems
will be sought and prosecuted."
