Dream Debut as Beds are Given a Trouncing

by NLP Staff
Sunday, September 23, 2007

The Amateur Football Combination made their debut in the FA National League System Cup with a resounding 4-0 win over the Bedfordshire and District Football League.

Colin Hawkins set the AFC on their way by lashing home the opener and he was joined on the scoresheet by Peter Eguae, Leon Smith and Steve Watson.

In the AFC Premier Division, UCL Academicals travelled to Old Meadonians having failed to beat them in seven years – and finally put that poor record to rest.

Accies opened the scoring after 20 minutes as Rick Hirst crossed from the right for Greg Blake to smash home on the volley from 15 yards, but their joy was shortlived when a run from Leon Smith was only halted by Dan Chantler’s foul in the penalty area. Ally McCombe converted the penalty to level the score.

After 70 minutes, a whipped corner fell to Accies captain Innis Pirrie who bundled the ball home from close-range for the winner.

Old Aloysians and Hale End shared the points.

Hale End took the lead as Danny Clements hooked home a ball from the middle of the area, but Aloysians quickly equalised through Dave Laird.

In Senior One, Clapham Old Xaverians travelled to Glyn Old Boys, and opened the scoring through Michael Garvey’s long- range shot. Glyn fought back in the second half. They finally breached Richard Rooney’s goal through Craig Carter and quickly took the lead via a Frank Kittard own goal.

With ten minutes to go Clapham forced an equaliser through Rio Bogle for a 2-2 result in a match superbly refereed by Deen Olugunna. Old Hamptonians travelled to Isleworthians and won comfortably 3-1. They had to come from behind after Rob McLaren’s opener, but hit back through Barney Lawrence-Jones, Matt Bronwyn and Ed Holdsworth.
