Champs Straight Back To Winning Habitsby Danny McConnell Sunday, September 14, 2008
THE OPENING weekend of the Amateur Football Combination saw defending Premier Division champions Old Aloysians beat Parmiterians 4-1.
Aloysians took the lead after 20 minutes when Dave Palmer crossed for Daniel O’Donohue to finish. In the second half, Andrew Steed made it two with an unstoppable volley from 20 yards.
Parmiterians reduced the deficit through Lewis Jones, but two goals from Dave Laird secured an emphatic win.
Last year’s runners-up Bealonians won 3-0 at home to HAC.
The first-half was 0-0 but Beals stepped it up after the break and went in front after Gary Bryson and Chris Brown combined to set-up Simon Paul to tuck home
from close range.
Paul was brought down for a penalty by keeper Steve Adcock, but Bryson blasted the kick against the bar. The reprieve was short-lived.
Brown put Bryson through to lob home before John Brown fed Paul to pull back for Carl Taylor to score.
Old Hamptonians won 4-1 at newly promoted Old Salvatorians.
Matt Harrison got their opener after just ten minutes and quickly added his second. It was three before half time when Phil Caldicott’s corner was powered
home by Paul Gower.
They didn’t let up after the break, Chris Heritage getting brought down and Ian Yates converting the subsequent penalty.
With ten minutes to go, Salvos grabbed a consolation with Liam Fitzgerald scoring a penalty after Eamonn Haneghan was brought down.
Parkfield fought back from 2-0 down to draw with Old Meadonians. Andy Thompson and Michael Richards gave Meads their lead, but then Thompson handled on the line and Ben Hodgson converted the penalty.
With ten minutes left, Parkfield equalised against the run of play as Paul Ripley’s cross was bundled in at the far post. In the final minute, Meads could’ve grabbed the points, but Matt Hodson saved well from Leon Smith.
In Senior Two Wood Green Old Boys travelled to new promoted UCL Academicals Reserves and opened brightly, taking a 3-0 lead at half time through Patrick
Sisupalan and a double from Lawrence Fernee. Although Accies had their share of possession, they rarely threatened and in the second half Wood Green continued to dominate.
Fernee completed his hat-trick, with further goals from Mark Taylor and Dave Adams making it six.
On his debut, Dave Barnsby kept a clean sheet with little effort, thanks to the superb marshalling of Tom Stanford.
