ROB HUGHES was left choked by football’s show of support after £14,000 was raised to aid his rehabilitation.
The former Sutton United midfielder – dubbed ‘Miracle Man’ by doctors after four brain operations after being savagely attacked in Crete – watched a benefit match in his honour.
Last Sunday’s all-star game at Hayes Lane saw a team of legends beat a Bromley XI 7-4, with Justin Edinburgh, Dover boss Andy Hessenthaler,

stand-in Colchester manager Kit Symons and former England cricket captain Alex Stewart all lacing up their boots.

Hughes said: “I’m now trying to get my life back on track and I am lost for words at this gesture.
“I have made some good friends in football and they have all stuck by me. I can’t thank everyone enough – the whole afternoon just took me aback.”
Hughes’ highlight was watching renowned ref-baiter Neil Warnock don the black top and whistle.
The Crystal Palace manager was given a dose of his own medicine from the touchline and didn't escape stick from either set of players.
Warnock said: “I’ve been accused of not moving from the centre circle but I would like to set the record straight.

“My hip was playing up so I was forced to ref – I didn’t want to let Rob down.
“Did I enjoy it? I wouldn’t go that far! I just thought it would make a change for the man in the middle to use a bit of common sense for once!”
