Furious Fry In Blast At Rollsby Sam Elliott Sunday, January 11, 2009
ANGRY Non-League legend Barry Fry branded Cambridge United director George Rolls the worst man he had dealt with in football as the Scott Rendell saga rumbled on.
The Peterborough United director of football is incensed by the U’s decision to make public negotiations for the on-off transfer of the striker.
Rolls released a statement on the club’s website on Wednesday that Cambridge “couldn’t meet the demands” of Posh for a £25,000 loan fee and a £25,000 promotion bonus.
Fry hit back – claiming Rolls had already agreed to the latest deal – before going to ground.
The transfer looked dead after Posh suggested Cambridge withdrew their £100,000 December offer for the player, with Rolls denying a bid was ever put in.
Fry said: “After all that went off, George came back to me again after Scotty. I said ‘look, the only way he’s going is if there’s a loan fee and a promotion bonus’. He said ‘fantastic’, and that’s what he’d do. We talked numbers and that, I thought, was that.
“We got all the papers ready last week, George was supposed to come over and see us on Friday. He texted me to say he had a business commitment and that the deal would be concluded on Monday. I didn’t hear from him, so when Wednesday came around I left a message ordering him to send Rendell back.
“They have promised Scott this, that and the other, and they’ve let him down big time.
“I have been in football for over 35 years and George Rolls is the worst person I have ever dealt with. He moves the goalposts to suit him. He twice agreed to pay what we asked for Scott and then backed out, blaming us for asking too much. He’s a disgrace.”
Rendell’s representative, Curtis Dawes, said: “I feel sorry for Scott and Peterborough for the way they’ve been treated. We are just trying to sort out a deal
for Scott to go somewhere so he can play games.”
Rolls said: “I take what Barry said about me being the worst person he’s dealt with as a compliment!
“We won’t spend money we haven’t got. We tried to do something, but it is every club’s prerogative to pull out of transfer dealings.”
