Former Premier League striker Marlon Harewood joins Nuneaton Town

NUNEATON TOWN have added their second striker of the week in the shape of former Premier League man Marlon Harewood.

Boro signed prolific Rushall Olympic forward Aaron Williams on Monday and goals are sure to be on the menu for the Liberty Way faithful after Harewood put pen to paper.

The former Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa and West Ham United striker ended last season at League Two .

He has now dropped into with Nuneaton and the big striker says the move fits him perfectly.

“Once I had met with the gaffer (Kevin Wilson), it was not a hard decision to make,” he said. “I was impressed with how passionate he was about what he wants for the club.

“I live in Nottingham where I have a car business, and have family in Leicestershire, so playing for Nuneaton fitted for me off the field as well as on it.

“I had heard about what Kevin had done as a manager, and I have known Chetts (assistant Steve Chettle) since I was a kid. I used to look up to him when we were at Forest, I know what he was like as a player, he was well respected at Forest and throughout the game.

“To be honest I did not know too much about the club, but the gaffer and Chetts speak very highly of the club and have told me there is a great fan base and they are hoping to get all the fans out and backing the team this season.”

Manager Wilson added: “His signing is a great coup for the club.He wanted to leave the full-time game, spend time on his business and with his family and what we have been able to offer him fits in with all of that.

“As soon as we knew he may be interested in joining us, I knew it was too good an opportunity to miss. It has taken nearly three weeks to get it over the line, but it is great that is has finally happened.

“He had been out in the Far East playing, and scoring, and came to see us train last Friday. We had a long conversation and we agreed a deal, which is predominantly performance related.

“Although he will not always be coaching, he will be a great example to the younger players we have in the squad and will be training with us two or three times a week.

“Marlon will give us more than goals, he has other attributes. He holds the ball up really well and brings in other players as well as scoring goals himself.”
