JON MCCARTHY is hoping that winning his last three games as Chester caretaker manager will be enough to get him the job on a permanent basis.
The former Northern Ireland international, 45, stepped up from assistant to take charge of the team for the final four games of the season after Steve Burr's sacking.
The Blues lost 2-1 at Lincoln City but then netted a hat-trick of victories against Welling United, Grimsby Town and Gateshead to secure their National League status and sign off in style.
Chester are close to naming their manager for next season and the club's strong end to the campaign will surely put McCarthy in the frame.
“What I won't do now is to put any pressure on the board,” the former Port Vale, York City and Birmingham City winger told BBC Radio Merseyside. “They gave me an opportunity and they have been great with me.
“I've been around the club for a while in a different capacity and it was just about changing the perception of me.
“People who know me know what I was like but there were a lot of fans who didn't know who I was. But I have my vision and philosophy for the club, and I am grateful they have given me a chance and listened to what I have had to say.”
