Maidstone United secure signing of defender Anthony Acheampong

ANTHONY ACHEAMPONG has joined Maidstone United just over a month after being on the losing side against them in the South promotion final.

Acheampong played the entire 120 minutes as Ebbsfleet and Maidstone slugged it out for a place in 's top tier.

Maidstone went on to win on penalties and claim a place in the National League next season and big defender Acheampong has followed them after his release from Stonebridge Road.

The 26-year-old centre-back had spent the past 18 months with Ebbsfleet, making 80 appearances following his move from .

Acheampong told the Maidstone website: “One of the reasons I signed for the club is to test myself against higher opposition.

“We've got a great chance here at Maidstone, there's a good philosophy and hopefully we can continue that. My personal aim is to keep as many clean sheets as possible and keep the club in the league.”

Boss Saunders added: “Jamie Coyle (player-coach) has known him a very long time and we half tried to get in touch with him last season before he signed a new contract at Ebbsfleet.

“For the last couple of seasons we've been interested in him and we're delighted to finally get him. Our promotions have been built on us being solid at the back first and foremost. If you can keep clean sheets, it gives you a good base to win games.”
