WREXHAM boss Dean Keates has continued to add experience to his squad with the addition of midfielder Russell Penn following his Carlisle United exit.
The 31-year-old join Carlisle from relegated York City in the summer but struggled for game time under Keith Curle, making just two appearances, and spent time on loan with Wrexham's league rivals Gateshead.
He cancelled his contract with the Cumbrians by mutual consent on Friday morning and was quickly announced as a Wrexham player, signing a deal until the end of the season.
Born in Dudley, Penn started his career at Birmingham City before a brief spell with Kidderminster Harriers led to a move to Scunthorpe United.
A return to Kidderminster followed in 2002 and the midfielder made over 150 appearances for Harriers, also playing for the England C team.
He remained in the Midlands following a move to Burton Albion and he then signed for Cheltenham Town, becoming the Robins' captain in 2013.
After 100 appearances for Cheltenham, Penn signed a two-and-a-half year deal with York in January 2014 and departed the Minstermen after their relegation back into Non-League at the end of last season.
His move to Carlisle didn't quite work out but Wrexham boss Keates will be hoping his experience can help the Dragons climb the National League.
Penn's arrival follows the signings of left-back James Jennings from Cheltenham and former Derby, MK Dons and Charlton striker Izale McLeod. Keates has also brought in young Burnley striker Ntumba Massanka on loan.
