Grimsby Town’s pursuit of Gateshead top scorer Sam Jones pays off on Deadline Day

top scorer Sam Jones was confirmed as a Grimsby Town player just before last night's transfer deadline after a month of chasing from the Mariners.

The attacking midfielder, 25, had scored 11 goals for Gateshead this season, just a few years after contemplating giving up his professional dream.

Released by Leeds United, Jones decided to head to Australia where he worked on a farm and in a cheese factory before returning to rediscovering his spark in the .

Last season he hit 19 goals for North side Alfreton from midfield to earn a move back to full-time football with Neil Aspin's Heed.

He has continued to excel in the National League and quickly became one of Gateshead's key players with his all action displays.

Grimsby have been linked with Jones throughout January with boss Marcus Bignot, the ex- manager, a big fan.

And they got their man just before the end of Deadline Day, securing Jones on a two-and-a-half year deal after both clubs agreed an undisclosed fee.

Jones told Grimsby's website: “I got a phone call this afternoon (Tuesday) from my agent telling me to get ready because I need to go down to Grimsby and sign.

“I jumped straight in the car to come down here and meet the gaffer. I knew I wanted to join this club so it was just about waiting for the call.

“It's been my aim for the last two years to get back into the Football League. I feel it's a good opportunity and it's a privilege to play for a club like Grimsby.”
