Hudson Handed Chance To Impress At Welling

CAMBRIDGE UNITED director of says Blaine Hudson's loan move to is a “fantastic opportunity” for the young defender.

Hudson has found first-team football hard to come by at the Abbey since making his U's debut back in January 2010.

He did feature 18 times in the second half of the 2011/12 Conference Premier campaign but injury and illness severely limited his involvement last season.

The 21-year-old was sent out on loan to in March this year and enjoyed a successful spell with the Blues prior to rejoining his parent club for the final game of the season – a 2-1 defeat at .

Blaine HudsonCambridge have four other centre-backs competing for a first team spot and as Hudson is behind new arrivals Ian Miller and Tom Bonner in the pecking order, the club have deciding to loan him out for the season.

His performances while at Road will go a long way to deciding whether his future lies with Cambridge or elsewhere, as Jez George explained.

George told the club's website: “We can assess his level of performance and progress over the season and we can all make a decision on his future next summer.

“With Blaine still being under the age of 24, we are protected despite his current contract expiring at the end of this season, so every eventuality is open to us at the end of his loan.”

But George feels the move is a good one for all parties, regardless of where Hudson ends up next term.

“This is a sensible agreement for everyone concerned,” he added.

“Blaine needs regular football after a couple of stop-start seasons, we need to see how he performs at this level over a full season.

“With the players that have signed, and those still at the club in his position, it looked unlikely that he would have enough game time with us this season.

“Welling are a good club, we know their manager very well as he also coaches our satellite academy in London and this is a fantastic opportunity for Blaine to play regularly at our level.”

The season-long deal doesn't include a recall clause but Hudson is not eligible to play against his parent club at any stage next term.
