CAMBRIDGE CITY boss Dan Gleeson has left the struggling League Southern Premier outfit after a run of 15 games without a win.

The 31-year-old, a former player for the Lilywhites, replaced Gary Roberts who shocked the club by resigning at the start of July following 13 years in the dugout.

The managerial rookie inherited a difficult situation and had to almost completely rebuild the squad after a number of key departures over the summer.

City showed promise at the start of the season but Tuesday's 2-1 defeat at Town extended their winless run to 15 matches with their last victory coming against on September 10.

The midweek result left City second bottom of the Southern Premier table and already ten points adrift of safety – prompting the club's board to take action on Wednesday morning.

Chairman Kevin Satchell said: “I am really disappointed that it hasn't worked out for Dan. He has worked incredibly hard and was faced with a very difficult situation when he arrived.

“Everybody has been hoping that results would improve but this hasn't been the case and I feel we need to make a change now so that we still have a fighting chance of avoiding relegation as we embark on the second half of the season.”

Departing Gleeson added: “I would like to thank everyone for the opportunity especially the chairman and the board, I accept the full responsibility for the results this season.

“However the plight of the club which I inherited was out of my control but it is my sincere wish that the club moves forward.

“With this in mind, I wish my successor all the very best in their quest to remain in the Premier Division this season.”

Neil Midgley has been put in temporary charge of the first team but the Lilywhites hope to appoint Gleeson's permanent successor imminently.
