Tunbridge Wells’ managerial mix-up!

have appointed Keith Bird as their new manager – after being left red-faced when Michael Maher denied he'd taken the job after the club announced it on their website.

The former  boss replaces Martin Larkin in the Culverden Stadium dug-out after the former boss' surprise decision to step down because of work commitments.

Larkin famously took the Wells to in 2013 when they reached the final without a playing budget.

It looked as if former  boss Maher would be taking charge – but the club appeared to jump the gun when he took to twitter to deny he was the new man.

Maher said: “I was interviewed on Monday and subsequently offered the job by the chairman.

“I requested time to speak to people relevant to the decision and also follow up the club's belief that certain players were staying.

“However, before I even contacted the chairman it had been made public I had accepted the post.

“Therefore I would like to make clear I never accepted the role, and information I was given was not correct. I wish them every success.”

The Wells' board has come under fire in the close season with chairman Clive Maynard this week offering to resign. It was rejected by the board.
