COCKFOSTERS were never going to be under par against Leighton Town after a star guest gave a special pre-match team-talk – golfer Andrew ‘Beef' Johnston!
The World number 86 – who shot to fame with his eighth-place finish in the Open earlier this year – dropped in to see the Spartan South Midlands club's 4-0 win last weekend.
Affectionately known as ‘Beef', the 27-year-old was invited into the changing room by boss Dean Barker to give a rousing team-talk – and after he even got the beers in.
“Beef was brilliant,” Barker told The NLP. “He knows the dad of one of the players and he said he'd come down. We got him in the changing room before the game and he gave a little speech. The changing room went silent while they were listening.
“He was talking about competing, how he's basically come from nowhere and look where he is now.
“Then after the game he bought the whole team a load of beers. He was one of the last to leave the club. He was saying that since the Open he's had lots of offers for things, so to give up his Saturday to watch us was brilliant.”
Barker's side are third in the table and have beaten top two – London Colney and Hertford Town – in the last month.
Barker, in his second season in charge, said: “Our objective at the start of the season was just to stay up, so we're punching well above our weight. Since we took we've made lots of new records and we're enjoying it.”
