Dennis Greene Gets Boston United Backing After Benefit Fraud

have backed manager Dennis Greene after he pleaded guilty to committing benefit fraud.

Pilgrims boss Greene, who took over towards the end of last season, claimed £6,166.86 in Housing and Council Tax benefits between September 2011 and January 2013 from Huntingdonshire District Council.

Greene claimed he was unemployed until March 2012, then in low paid employment before being unemployed again from July 2012.

However, he was manager of St Neots and then during that time, and Greene pleaded guilty at Peterborough Magistrates Court on February 5.

He will complete 100 hours of unpaid work and pay back the full amount, plus an extra £1,500 to the council.

Despite the revelation, Pilgrims chairman David Newton says the club turned down Greene's offer to step down with United fifth in the Skrill North.

Newton said: “Despite the club's history, this matter has been dealt with in the same way that all other employment issues are dealt with at Boston United. Through a disciplinary process, we have been able to establish the facts surrounding the case.

“We have taken those facts into account, together with the fact Dennis pleaded guilty in an attempt to minimise the impact on Boston United; he is very upset by his actions and the potential impact on Boston United; he did offer his resignation; he will fully comply with the sentencing requirements and, very importantly, the false claims pre-dated his employment at Boston United.

“Dennis has accepted the outcome of the disciplinary procedure and he will remain first team manager of Boston United Club.”
