Steve Housham leaves Gainsborough Trinity by mutual consent

captain Dominic Roma has been placed in temporary charge of the first team until the end of the season after boss Steve Housham departed by mutual consent.

Housham left his position on Thursday after four-and-a-half years at the helm following a meeting with chairman Richard Kane.

He joined his hometown club in 2011 as youth team manager but was quickly promoted to first team boss in September of that year after Brian Little's exit.

Housham led Trinity to the Conference North play-off final in his first season in charge but they were beaten by Nuneaton Town and they haven't reached those heights again since.

He did take the club to an semi-final in 2012-13 and they made the first round this season but after four straight league defeats, Housham has left the club.

He told the Lincolnshire Echo: “I'm gutted. I live and breathe the club. I am a Gainsborough lad anyway and I love the town, the club and the players.

“Going in there tonight (Thursday) and telling the players was so hard for me to do. And it was difficult for them as well. I had to stand outside for a while and hold back the tears before I went in to talk to them. But I wanted to tell them face to face and not by text or over the phone.

“Wherever I have managed I have always had very good relationships with the players. I love the lads to bits and they seem to love me too so I will take that away with me and always be proud of that.”

Chairman Kane added: We as a club and I personally, would like to thank Steve for his efforts over the years and wish him all the best for the future.”

Former United defender Roma has been put in temporary charge for the rest of the campaign and will be assisted by veteran striker Darryn Stamp.

Trinity are 13th and seven points above the relegation zone ahead of Saturday's home game against Nuneaton Town.
