have plenty of reason for festive cheer after landing Rhys Murrell-Williamson – all thanks to supporters bearing Christmas gifts.

The 23-year-old has turned down the attentions of several other higher-ranked clubs to commit his future to the Ryman Premier side after a successful loan spell.

And it left Hamlet manager Gavin Rose praising the generosity of the club's fans, who helped seal the deal for the striker with money raised from their ‘12th-man Scheme'.

Rose told : “To be honest I had seen Rhys play over the last few years but he wasn't always playing regularly and we didn't always have the money. I knew he had talent and when he became available he seemed like the right player to spend the funds on.

Competitive

“It really is a great scheme and loyal fans donate every month or week so it means a lot to us. It bridges the gap between supporters, myself and the club.

“Rhys has done really well since he has come in and we have managed to get him to sign a short-term contract – which is not easy.

“But he is a sensible young man and despite interest from League clubs he has realised that he will be playing competitive football here with the chance of getting noticed.”

Having scored five goals and assisted six more in 19 matches, the young forward is proving himself, with Hamlet winning four of their last six league games.

“We are hoping he stays at least until the end of the season,” Rose said. “But whatever happens we would wish him well. For now he is enjoying his football and we are enjoying having him here.”
