Marcus Maddison Departs Gateshead For Record Fee

MARCUS MADDISON has become the latest player to move into the League after being snapped up by Peterborough United for a “sizeable six-figure sum”.

The 20-year-old forward, who had already scored four times this season, has agreed a four-year deal with League One Posh and has netted a club record fee long with a 20 per cent sell-on clause.

Heed boss said: “Marcus has a big future ahead of him but this was a big decision for us. He is an up and coming player, with an abundance of ability – and, unfortunately, that's why we are losing him.

“Now he has sorted himself out, mentally, we're seeing the best of him. We will miss him, but it's my job to make sure we don't miss him too much.

“I have attacking players here but will also look to go out and maybe bring in one or two to strengthen the squad.”

He was released by Newcastle United last summer before joining Gateshead and he went on to feature 32 times last season, scoring nine times.

“He has good balance, skill, pace and we feel this could be a good signing,” said Posh boss Darren Ferguson.

“He has been to Newcastle, gone to Gateshead and done very well. He is a player that has had a go at the big time, it didn't quite work out as he had hoped but he has gone into the Non-League and is on his way back up again.”
