Macclesfield boss John Askey expresses interest in Wrexham job but says club must come to him

boss John Askey says while he has had no contact yet with , he would be interested in taking over at the Racecourse.

The Dragons are searching for a new boss following the sacking of Gary Mills last week after a poor start to the season.

Askey, currently manager at league rivals Macclesfield, has been installed as the odds-on favourite to take over in north Wales by the bookies, ahead of caretaker boss Dean Keates and The New Saints head coach Craig Harrison.

A Macclesfield legend, Askey played for the Silkmen for 19 years, making over 500 appearances before taking over as manager.

Now in his second spell in charge, Askey has kept Macclesfield competitive in 's top division despite an extremely tight budget at the Moss Rose.

The chance to work for a club like Wrexham is appealing to the 51-year-old but he insists that the Dragons must make the first move.

“I think you have got to be interested if a club like Wrexham came calling,” Askey told The Leader. “At the end of the day I am under contract at Macclesfield.

“I can't apply because I am at Macclesfield but I am sure if anybody wants me from Wrexham, they know what I have done and I am sure they will be in touch with Macclesfield.

“If Wrexham are interested in me that is where it has got to come form. People talk but I have not been in touch with Wrexham and Wrexham have not been in touch with me.

“It is flattering to be linked with a club like Wrexham, they are potentially one of the biggest clubs in the Conference. It is nice when you get linked with a club like Wrexham, it shows you are doing something right.”
