MACCLESFIELD TOWN boss John Askey isn't expecting a cash boost from their FA Cup exploits – the prize money will be used to pay the club's VAT bill!
John McCombe's 23rd-minute header was enough to see the Silkmen beat League One club Walsall on Saturday and send them through to the second round.
Macclesfield will host Oxford United next with the winner picking up £27,000. Macc were handed £18,000 for their victory at Walsall and Askey says it will be put to good use.
The boss told BBC Sport: “It is massive as it means we can pay the VAT bill this week. We've not got a benefactor – there are a lot of clubs in our league that have, but we haven't.
“It is only through the generosity of the supporters that we're able to compete like we do.”
Macclesfield have an impressive record in the FA Cup having beaten Swindon Town and Cardiff City in recent years.
The Silkmen have enjoyed a positive start to the season and currently sit tenth in the National League with a modest budget.
Askey, who was recently linked with the managerial vacancy at league rivals Wrexham, says the FA Cup has been vital in keeping the Silkmen going in recent seasons.
“The FA Cup has saved the club numerous times,” he added. “I remember when we played West Ham one year and if we hadn't got them in the cup, we could've gone under as a club.
“We want to try and get to the third round, and if we can then obviously you are looking for one of the big boys.”
