Forest Green Rovers win the race for Chelmsford City starlet Shamir Mullings

FOREST GREEN ROVERS have won the race for highly-rated striker Shamir Mullings, signing the forward for an undisclosed fee.

Mullings, 23, has impressed with the side so far this season after joining from in the summer.

His 14 goals and five assists in 22 games attracted interest from a number of clubs, with League One outfits Gillingham and Peterborough United and League Two side Luton reportedly keen.

However, ambitious Forest Green have moved quickly to secure the signature of the 6ft 5in striker, who started his career at before dropping into .

On his move to the New Lawn, Mullings told the club's website: “I'm very excited and ready for the new challenge. I'm ready to work hard and hit the ground running.

“The goals don't change and I've just got to keep doing what I've been doing. It is a club that's full of aspiration and I will work hard for 95 minutes, battle, and do my best for the team.”

Boss Mark Cooper added: “I spoke recently about adding a bit of presence and size and Sham is a big handful, 6ft 5in, rapidly quick and shown this season he can score goals – and he will definitely add to the squad.

“We had the advantage of League clubs not being able to sign him until January so we got in there first. It's taken a lot of work but I'm very happy to complete the signing.”

Meanwhile, Rovers defender Charlie Clough has also signed a new deal with the club that will keep him at the New Lawn until the end of the 2018-19 campaign.

The 26-year-old, who signed from Sutton United almost two years ago, said: “I like what's going on here. The club is ambitious and I want to get into the Football League with the club.”
