GATESHEAD have appointed Gary Mills as their new manager – just as we revealed they had hoped to do in Sunday's paper!
Mills has an extensive managerial resume, having previously managed at Grantham Town, King's Lynn, Tamworth (on two occasions), Notts County, Alfreton Town and York City.
His achievements include; winning the Southern League Midland Division in 1997/98, leading Tamworth to the Conference North title in 2008/09 – winning the Manager of the Year award in the process – and guiding York to a historic Wembley double when they won the Conference Premier play-offs and the FA Trophy in 2011/12.
The 51-year-old was sacked by the Minstermen in March – less than eight months after their Wembley successes – and has been itching to get back into management ever since.
He was always Gateshead's first choice and their chairman, Graham Wood, is delighted to have got his man.
Speaking to the club's website, Wood said: “Gary Mills was my first choice as manager. There was a lot of interest in the job but he has a proven track record and was the stand out candidate.
“He did a magnificent job at York City and I was impressed with what he had to say and his vision for the club when we met up for discussions.
“To get York back into the Football League having won the FA Trophy a week earlier was a tremendous achievement and he also did a fine job to get promotion at Tamworth.
“He is very keen to make an impression at Gateshead and I am confident he will get the best out of the players and take the club forward.”
Mills' first game in charge of the Heed, who are 19th in the Skrill Premier, will be against seventh-placed Hereford United at the International Stadium this Saturday.
