RICHARD MONEY saw his Cambridge United side squeeze past St Albans in the FA Trophy thanks to an injury-time winner but then said there's “no real encouragement to win this competition”.
Aaron Pierre sent the Skrill Premier leaders through to the third round, where they will host Luton Town, after John Frendo had equalised for the Saints following Nathan Arnold's opener.
Despite seeing his side avoid a potential banana skin, Money asked after the match if it was worth winning the game after all.
“We've got through and we're grateful for no replay, that's the most important thing,” he said. “I was disappointed when Frendo put that one over near the end to be honest with you – but then we've gone and scored.”
There has been plenty of talk surrounding the Trophy after the final was moved to March and attendances in this season's earlier rounds have been disappointing. And Money's remarks will only lead to more discussions surrounding whether Non-League's top competition needs a shake up.
“We now lose another Saturday league game,” Money continued. “Why this isn't a midweek competition with no replays, I just don't understand.
“There is no real encouragement for anyone who's trying to get promoted to try and win this competition.”
