FORMER Wales international Gavin Williams has stepped up to replace Steve Jenkins as manager of Merthyr Town.
Jenkins, also a former Wales cap, has resigned as Merthyr boss after two years in charge. He led the Martyrs to the Southern South & West title in 2014-15 before a tenth place finish in the Premier division last term.
Merthyr also won the Red Insure Cup last season for the first time in over 60 years but Jenkins decided to step down and was yesterday named as Hereford FC's new assistant manager.
Replacing Jenkins in the Penydarren Park hot-seat is Williams, a former midfielder for Hereford United, Yeovil, West Ham, Ipswich, Bristol City and Bristol Rovers.
He joined the Martyrs – his hometown club – as a player in January 2014 before becoming player-assistant manager months later. And departing boss Jenkins believes his replacement is the perfect man to continue the club's progression.
He told the club's website: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody at the club for their fantastic support during my two years at the club.
“It was a great two years and I'll never forget the Bank Holiday weekend when we won the league and clinched promotion back to the Southern Premier.
“Last season, we had our tough moments but we got through them together, and to win the Southern League Cup and finish the season in tenth was a great achievement for everyone involved in the club from supporters, board members, staff and players who were magnificent.
“It was an incredibly difficult decision to leave and it was something I agonised over a number of weeks, but I think it's the right decision for the cub and myself. I would also like to wish Gavin all the very best in his new role and I am sure everyone will give him and Ashley the support to take the club forward.”
