have appointed former fan favourite Robbie Nightingale as their new manager – and he has already brought in four new players!

Nightingale made over 350 City appearances as a player and also captained the side that played in the last first team match at Milton Road in April 2013.

He left the club in the summer of 2013 and later moved into management with Soham Town Rangers, whom he leaves 15th in the Ryman North.

Nightingale takes charge of a Cambridge side that haven't won in 15 League Southern Premier matches and sit second bottom of the table.

He replaces Dan Gleeson in the dugout after the managerial rookie left earlier this week following Tuesday night's defeat at Town.

Nightingale told City's website: “I am absolutely delighted to be given this opportunity to come back and manage a team who not only I played for but who I support too. I was even a mascot many years ago so to now be manager is an amazing feeling.

“Therefore, I know what it means to be a fan and a player for this club and I am absolutely determined to bring the good times back to Cambridge City.

“However, right now we have to deal with the current situation and that means improving our league position. I know it looks bleak but I am confident we can stay up.

“When Dave Theobald and I were appointed at Soham the team were several points adrift, but we stayed up so I know what is needed to get this right.

“It will inevitably mean investing in new playing personnel but they must be players who are up for the challenge ahead and take pride in wearing the City shirt.”

Nightingale has moved quickly to improve the City squad, adding four new players ahead of Saturday's visit of .

Centre-back Jordan Gent, and midfielders Ryan Sharman, Ross Paterson and Salim Relizani have all followed the boss from former club Soham Town Rangers.

Meanwhile, Charlie Day has asked to be released from the club while Erkan Okay has also departed.
