Fans need to start turning up or risk Southern Central title bid, say Farnborough

FARNBOROUGH have warned their supporters: start turning up to games or the directors will no longer fund a push for promotion.

The Southern League Central side are top of the table, ahead of Royston Town on goal difference, after suffering relegation from the Ryman Premier because of complications with their CVA last season.

Manager Spencer Day was told to put a team together to challenge for an instant return to Step 3 – but the fans haven’t backed their vision.

Not a single one of the Cherrywood Road faithful have signed up to the ‘Boost the Boro’ standing order scheme put in place to try and enhance the club’s spending power.

And despite the club sitting so close to the top of the table, attendances have been poor as the divide between supporters and the board shows no sign of a quick repair.

A crowd of just 189 was recorded last Saturday for the visit of Hanwell Town. Farnborough believe just 100 spectators paid the admission fee – and they say the club made a loss of £300 from the game and that’s before players’ wages and overheads are taken into consideration.

A club statement released this week confirmed: “With the current low level of attendances and with no fans having bought into the Boost the Boro scheme, the current playing budget cannot be maintained.

“We are not prepared to run the club at a loss as we know where that can lead, as seen in recent years. On the eve of the season we made it clear that our supporters either had to use or lose the facilities.

“Difficult decisions will need to be made extremely quickly and we have informed the manager of the budget position that looks likely to be adjusted imminently if things don’t change.”
