Player-manager Jason Matthews to leave Weymouth after Dorset Senior Cup final

JASON MATTHEWS will leave his role as manager of Weymouth after next Tuesday’s Dorset Senior Cup final against Gillingham Town.

The 42-year-old, who has been in charge since December 2013 following the sacking of Brendon King, will hope to leave the Terras on a high after three-and-a-half years at the helm.

Weymouth are currently 11th in the Evo-Stik League Southern Premier but they are 20 points adrift of the top five despite a run of nine games unbeaten.

Terras chairman Chris Pugsley resigned on Monday – with director Steve Mills replacing him – and it was announced on Wednesday evening that Matthews would also be leaving.

The goalkeeper made over 400 appearances in goal for the Terras and was a popular figure among supporters in the South West.

A club statement read: “Weymouth Football Club and manager Jason Matthews have parted company by mutual consent after nearly three-and-a half years.

“The club wish to place on record their thanks for the hard work and dedication that Jason has made during his tenure.  Not only as a manager but Jason enjoys legendary status at the club as a long serving goalkeeper.

“Supporters will have the chance to thank and wish farewell to Jason when he takes charge of the side for the last time in the Dorset Senior Cup Final against Gillingham Town on Tuesday at the Avenue Stadium.

“This is a sad day for directors and staff who consider Jason more of a friend than a manager and he will be warmly welcomed at the Bob Lucas Stadium any time in the future.

“We wish Jason all the best in his future football career wherever that takes him.”
