WELSH minnows Glantraeth FC have announced an unlikely new club president – Hollywood star Naomi Watts!

The 47-year-old actress was born in Kent but spent some of her childhood with grandparents Nikki and Hugh Roberts on Anglesey, the island on which Glantraeth are based.

She has been nominated on more than one occasion for an Academy Award for Best Actress and is perhaps best known for her role in the 2005 remake of King Kong.

The club, formed in 1984, currently play in the Welsh Alliance Division One – the third tier of Welsh – and announced the unlikely news on Tuesday.

Watts succeeds Sir George Meyrick who recently stood down after 20 years as president and the club say the A-lister is  “very excited to be taking on this honorary position in the club”.

Secretary Stan Strickland added: “She spent three years of her childhood here and attended school in Llangefni before becoming a major film star.

“I just thought ‘if you don't ask, you don't get'. She has now got her publicist involved, so we could end up in the New York Times.”
