GRIMSBY TOWN have confirmed goalkeeper James McKeown is in ‘good spirits' despite being admitted to hospital with viral meningitis.
The Mariners stopper was named Goalkeeper of the Year at our recent National Game Awards for another impressive season. He helped the club to the Conference play-off final before a tough defeat on penalties to Bristol Rovers.
McKeown is being treated at the Diana, Princess Of Wales Hospital after missing Grimsby's friendly with Gainsborough Trinity on Saturday.
The 25-year-old also pulled out of Tuesday's friendly with North Ferriby due to stomach pains.
Viral meningitis is a mild form of the infection and is usually treated with antibiotics, intravenous fluids and anti-viral medicines.
A Grimsby statement said: “James is being treated at the Diana, Princess Of Wales Hospital. Despite the illness, the Town stopper is in good spirits and says that he should be considered for the ‘bravest keeper in the world' award after he said he wanted to play at North Ferriby last week.
“We would like to wish James a speedy recovery.”
