Lincoln City invite Gibraltarian namesakes to city to celebrate famous victory

LINCOLN CITY have invited their Gibraltarian namesakes to Sincil Bank to celebrate their famous Champions League victory over Scottish giants Celtic.

Part-timers Lincoln Red Imps shocked Brendan Rodgers' side on Tuesday night, winning the first leg of their European tie 1-0 at the Victoria Stadium.

Many people connected with the Glasgow club are calling it their worst ever defeat ahead of the return game next Wednesday.

Lincoln director Roger Bates said it would be “wonderful” if the Red Imps were to visit the club on their way home from Scotland next week.

The Gibraltar outfit changed their name from Blue Batons to Lincoln Red Imps after Reg Brealey, a former Lincoln City director, met the club while on holiday in the 1970s.

He decided to sponsor the team and paid for a new kit with the club being rebranded as part of the deal.

Now Bates is hoping the two sides can meet 40 years after the connection was started.

“It is quite an amazing story – I don't think anyone expected it,” he said. “Some people seemed to think we'd beaten Celtic, which would have been wonderful, but no, it wasn't us.

“We've had the association for 40 years without coming together, so it would be wonderful if they could pay us a visit.”
