CONTROVERSY was sparked last night after Plymouth Argyle's reserves named eight first team players in their team to play AFC St Austell in the South West Peninsula League.
Argyle's reserves entered the Non-League Pyramid prior to last season and won promotion from the South West Peninsula League Division One West in their first campaign.
They have started their Step 6 Premier season in good form but questions have been asked after a team packed with senior experience in the Football League thrashed St Austell – FA Vase semi-finalists in 2015 – 6-0.
Ex-Whitehawk midfielder David Ijaha netted twice and Scotland international David Goodwillie, pictured, also scored alongside former Sheffield United and Blackburn striker Jordan Slew, Reading loanee Craig Tanner and Northern Ireland U19 cap Louis Rooney.
Frustrated St Austell, who finished second in the SWPL last season, tweeted: “The difference between a side who've been working all day and a side who had a gentle jog after lunch shows.
“For those questioning, we have no issues with Plymouth Argyle FC and fully appreciate what they're trying to achieve as a club.
“We wish them all the very best for the remainder of the season and look forward to the return fixture at Poltair Park.”
Last season's champions Bodmin Town had their say, adding: “Got to feel for AFC St Austell with the SWP League allowing Plymouth Argyle to select so many first team players in their competition.”
League secretary Phil Hiscox responded, however, pointing out that the SWP League has no say on eligibility rules in their divisions.
“We have sympathy, yes, but no rules to stop it. I understand they are players who have been on the bench in need of game time,” he said.
“In Pyramid Leagues such as the SWP the FA dictate the eligibility of players – if you are in a Pyramid League you have to live by their rules. Argyle did have 12-0 and 9-0 wins in the West Division last season too.”
