Newport County Draft In Charlton Athletic Youngster

NEWPORT COUNTY signed Charlton Athletic frontman Michael Smith on a one-month loan deal over the weekend.

The striker started out with Wallsend Boys Club – the famous north east youth club that has produced professional footballers of the ilk of Steve Bruce and Peter Beardsley.

He joined in 2010 and went on to make over 35 appearances for the Quakers before moving up the pyramid to sign for Charlton on a three-year deal in August 2011.

Smith made his senior debut for the Addicks in the League Cup this August but is not set to figure regularly during their Championship campaign and has therefore been loaned out to the Exiles.

The forward will be part of the Newport squad that face Cambridge United on Tuesday as long as the Welsh club receive international clearance in time.
