SOUTHPORT chairman Charlie Clapham says new manager John Coleman has the “experience and knowledge” to take the club forward.
The Sandgrounders sacked Alan Wright last Friday following a run of six straight defeats that have left the club just two points above the Skrill Premier relegation zone.
Coleman, who has previously been in charge at Ashton United, Accrington Stanley and Rotherham, has now succeeded him at Merseyrail Community Stadium and Clapham says his credentials will stand him in good stead.
Speaking to the club's website, Clapham said: “I am delighted to announce John Coleman as our new manager.
“John has all the experience and knowledge to take Southport Football Club forward. Everyone connected with the club will acknowledge it has been a very difficult period for the club after recent results, hence the actions the club with regret had to take.
“We now move on with a new manager who has all the credentials to achieve results. I am sure everyone will welcome John back to the club he played for in the 1980's.”
Coleman will be assisted by his number two at Accrington, Jimmy Bell, who leaves his post as reserve team manager at Port Vale to take up the role.
Southport's next game comes away at tenth-placed Salisbury City on Saturday, December 21.
