JOSH WILSON may be more used to a title tilt than a relegation scrap, but the AFC Telford new-boy is convinced he can help the Bucks beat the drop.
Wilson, who had promotion pushes in the Conference North with Guiseley and Conference Premier with FC Halifax, has swapped National League North high-flyers AFC Fylde for relegation-threatened Telford.
The 27-year-old striker made an instant impact on his debut by scoring just 12 minutes after coming off the bench against Solihull Moors last weekend.
It couldn't prevent a 2-1 defeat for Rob Smith's side, but former England C international Wilson is optimistic they can get out of trouble.
“I never like to do things easy,” Wilson told The NLP. “It's from one challenge to another, but they are both challenges in themselves and it gives me something to play and aim for.
“Funnily enough, the game before I signed was when they played Fylde so I got the chance to watch them and they were unlucky not to get anything out of that game, just like at Solihull.
Experience
“When the opportunity and challenge of Telford came about I fancied it. It's a massive club – probably on a par with Halifax as the biggest clubs I've played for.
“I've got a great track record of scoring goals in this league when I've played up front and I've got to the play-offs the last few seasons in the Conference and the Conference North.
“Before that I was at Vauxhall Motors. It was a great time, one of the best of my career, but unfortunately we were often fighting at the end of the wrong end of the table. I can bring that experience into the Telford changing room as well.”
Wilson also had the perfect person to help with his homework on the club before signing – former Cardinal Heenan class-mate Sean Clancy.
“I used to sit next to Sean at school so we're good mates,” Wilson added. “I've played against him on a couple of occasions but the last time we played together would have been in Year 11.
“Sean was a great player for our school. He was at Liverpool's Academy, had pace and a great left foot – he's still got that but I think the pace has dropped off him a bit now!
“I'm looking forward to linking up with him. We've already been having a great laugh in our car school, but most importantly we've got our sights on keeping Telford up.
“It's a tough task we've got ahead, but with the players we've got, we're more than capable.”
