Dion Dublin: Carlisle United face tough battle to get out of the National League

Dion Dublin has warned Carlisle United that promotion from the National League requires more than individual talent, with the former Premier League striker stressing the importance of grit, resilience and togetherness.

Former Premier League striker Dion Dublin has warned Carlisle United that they cannot afford to drop their guard in the National League, insisting that escaping the fifth-tier requires collective grit and a willingness to scrap.

Carlisle ended their 21-year spell in the EFL in 2025 after suffering back-to-back relegations.

Mark Hughes remained in charge at Brunton Park and guided the Blues to a third-placed finish last season, but left following their play-off defeat to Boreham Wood.

Rob Elliot took over ahead of this campaign, but results have been mixed. Four wins from 13 matches have left Carlisle 14th in the table, six points adrift of the play-off places.

Tough league

The Cumbrians’ bid to return to the Football League comes against the backdrop of rising standards in the National League.

Dublin pointed to the growing number of former fifth-tier clubs reaching the Championship as evidence of the challenge facing Carlisle, with Wrexham, Luton Town and Lincoln City all having climbed into the second tier after recent spells in Non-League football.

“It’s such a tough league with a lot of quality,” the former Aston Villa, Coventry City and Cambridge United forward told BetVictor.

“We are starting to see teams coming out of the National League, through League Two, and making their way into the Championship.

“The quality is there, which is why it’s so hard to get out of the National League.”

Grit

Addressing Carlisle’s campaign directly, Dublin cautioned that simply recruiting individual talent from higher divisions is not a shortcut to success.

“Carlisle United can’t drop their guard, and you can’t just grab players from leagues above, stick them in, and expect one player to do it all,” Dublin explained.

“You have to have gel and grit.”

Drawing on his insight as a director at Cambridge United, as well as his own playing roots helping the club rise through the divisions, Dublin knows firsthand what it takes to battle out of Non-League football, emphasising that navigating the relentless schedule demands genuine physical and mental resilience.

Scrap

“When I say you’ve got to be able to scrap, I mean you’ve got to be able to get knocked down and get back up again,” Dublin added.

“Bruises recover quickly, another game on Tuesday, another on Friday, another on Tuesday.

“If you’re not willing to go through that pain, you’re going to struggle. They have to do that, they really do.

“Cambridge United did.”
