AFC Fylde star Danny Ormerod joins Peterborough United in blockbuster deal

AFC Fylde sensation Danny Ormerod has joined League One Peterborough United in a blockbuster deal for an initial £600,000 fee.

The 20-year-old forward has been in demand this summer after hitting 31 goals for Craig Mahon’s Coasters last season as they won the National League North title.

Ormerod has continued that scintillating form this season with two goals – against Tamworth and Woking – in their opening three games back in Non-League’s top flight.

Ormerod, who came through Fylde’s academy and had a loan spell at Chorley in 2024, also landed the National League North Player and Young Player of the Year awards.

Fylde have knocked back a number of bids since the end of last season and on Tuesday released a statement to reveal that included offers of up to £500,000, while reaffirming their stance of not selling until an “appropriate proposal” was put forward.

Record

However, the Posh have since been able to formalise a £600,000 deal plus future sell-on for the attacking talent and he completed his medical on Wednesday.

Peterborough’s track record in buying Non-League gems is well known. Only this summer they sold Kyrell Lisbie to Championship outfit just one year after signing the attacker from Braintree Town.

A Fylde statement read: “AFC Fylde can confirm that we have reached an agreement with Peterborough United for the permanent transfer of Danny Ormerod.

“Danny leaves Mill Farm having written his name firmly into the Club’s folklore. An AFC Fylde Academy graduate, he made his senior debut as a 17-year-old in 2023 and has since gone on to score 42 goals across all competitions for the Coasters, developing into one of the brightest young forwards in Non-League football.

“This is an outstanding deal for AFC Fylde and one which everyone involved in Danny’s journey should take enormous pride in.

“From his early development within the Academy, through to the coaches, staff and teammates who have helped him progress into the player he is today, this transfer is a reflection of the excellent work being done at all levels within the football club. 

“The agreement with Peterborough United represents a guaranteed fee of £600,000, alongside a substantial future sell-on clause. We believe the guaranteed element of the transfer places Danny as the second-highest National League transfer of all time and is a significant piece of business for the club as we continue to build for the future. 

“Transfers like this are never easy, as the selling club never want to lose their best players, but having set a valuation, when that valuation was met, we honoured our commitment to Peterborough.

“It’s fair to say that since initial discussions began back in June, Peterborough have come a long way from their original position, and we think this deal represents tremendous value for both clubs.

First class

“We have thoroughly enjoyed our dealings with Peterborough throughout the process. Their professionalism and approach have been first class, and we would like to place on record our thanks to Barry Fry and their Chairman, Darragh MacAnthony, for the professional way in which they have conducted business.

“For Danny, this is a fantastic opportunity and one that he has earned through his hard work, determination and performances in an AFC Fylde shirt.

“He has an exciting career ahead of him, and everyone associated with the Club will be watching his progress with great pride as he takes the next step in his journey. We would like to wish Danny and his family every success for the future.

“The Club’s attention now turns immediately to Friday’s National League fixture against Forest Green Rovers, where our full focus will be on continuing the positive start we have made to the season.”

Peterborough boss Luke Williams said: “Danny is a player that has plenty of potential and has played a good amount of games for his age.

“He will provide another attacking option for us and we are looking forward to working with us.”
