The Heed overcame a dogged side at the International Stadium on Saturday afternoon to move within one win of securing a return to 's top tier – although just one point should be enough given their superior goal difference over title rivals .

Williamson's men raced into a two-goal lead at the International Stadium as Dan Ward and Cedwyn Scott both found the net with neat finishes inside the opening quarter-hour.

Heed nerves were set slightly on edge when the visitors got back into the game with a goal from striker Jordan Archer eight minutes before half-time.

Despite the Sandgrounders enjoying sustained spells of possession, they never really threatened to get back on level-terms throughout a hard-fought second-half.

And any doubt over the outcome of the game was swept away by a powerful finish from Heed midfielder Owen Bailey seven minutes from time.

Williamson praised his players in the aftermath of the win and revealed his thoughts on what has taken them to within touching distance of the title.

He told the : “Our preparation was spot-on for this game because we knew how difficult it would be.

“We started extremely well and there was an emphasis on that after conceding early in our last two games.

“We had to show that resilience and that calmness when Southport got back into the game but the lads showed that in abundance.

“When there is one goal in it, it's always dangerous but we stayed calm and we stayed focus.

“The consistency and the resilience has surprised me – but some of the we have played and the heart we have shown has not surprised me.

“Working with this group of lads, you feel that everyday, they're a good group and you can feel the chemistry between them all.”

All focus now switches towards Monday's visit to as Williamson's men look to seal the title at Victory Park.

The Heed boss warned his side of the size of the challenge that lies ahead of them against the Magpies as he looked to keep his cool ahead of a potentially historic moment for the club.

“We need a result at Chorley, it's as simple as that,” explained the former Newcastle United centre-back.

“Nothing changes in that regard.

“They're fifth for a reason, they're a good side with a good manager.

“They'll be well-organised and they'll want to get a win.

“We have to be at our best to get what we need.”
