AFC RUSHDEN & DIAMONDS boss Mark Starmer hinted that home is where the heart is when reflecting on his side's 8-0 FA Cup victory against Cockfosters, writes Harriet Drudge.
The second qualifying round replay at the Dog & Duck was a ‘completely different game' according to Starmer, who has seen his side score 28 goals in all competitions at home this season.
“Home teams always play at a higher tempo and seem more up for it – it's difficult when you're the away side,” said Starmer.
“Our home form is very good. We managed to get out wide more often than we did on Saturday and credit to our wingers the crosses they delivered were brilliant. We took our chances this time which made the difference.”
One man in particular buried his chances; new signing Russell Dunkley scored five of the home side's goals, taking his season tally to 12 in only 11 appearances for the United Counties Premier League club.
“Russell was a threat all night long. He scores goals with his feet too, but he's a fantastic header of a ball as last night's display proved,” added the Diamonds boss.
“He has been a major plus for us since signing and he's doing what we bought him to do. He adds so much experience to our young side.”
The reward for Diamonds is a home tie in the next round against Calor League Premier Division side Cambridge City.
“Cambridge City are flying high at the moment. We played them a few years ago in the FA Cup and lost, but we're at home which is a bonus for us. They will be strong but we are in good form and we'll enjoy the day,” said Starmer.
“We're competing in the biggest cup competition in the world and we want to stay in it for as long as possible.”
