Influential Ed Palmer has left Torquay United for a new challenge – at Step 4 new boys Barnstaple Town.

The 34-year-old led the Gulls to the verge of promotion back to the National League, only to be edged out by Hornchurch in the play-off final.

Now at the expiry of the contract, the experienced centre-back has opted to team up with ambitious Barum boss Ben Potter with the Devon club looking to kick on in Southern League Division One South next season having won the Western League and Cup double last season.

“It seems like a really exciting project,” the former Truro City, Tiverton, Taunton and Weymouth defender told the club’s media.

“I spoke to (manager) Ben (Potter), he’s keen to crack on with this league after a positive season last season so hopefully I can add to the good squad here and we can push on.”
