South Shields snap up former Leicester City youngster Khanya Leshabela

South Shields have signed midfielder Khanya Leshabela, with the former Leicester City youngster joining Mike Williamson’s side after 44 appearances for AFC Telford United last season.

Khanya Leshabela has joined South Shields.

Khanya Leshabela believes he can “fit right into” South Shields’ style of play after completing his move to the Mariners.

The midfielder becomes Mike Williamson’s fourth summer signing after arriving at Mariners Park.

He most recently turned out for AFC Telford United, where he made 44 appearances in the National League North last season.

Leshabela also has plenty of Non-League pedigree, having previously enjoyed spells with Enfield Town, Spalding United and Bedford Town.

Clear strategy

The South African returned to his homeland with Cape Town City in early 2024 following his departure from Premier League champions Leicester City.

However, he was back in England later that year and is now ready to begin the next chapter of his career with South Shields.

The 26-year-old said the Mariners’ “clear strategy and philosophy” was a key factor behind his decision to join Williamson’s side.

“I’m delighted to finally be here,” Leshabela told the club’s website. “I’ve met pretty much everyone already and they’ve all been really welcoming.

“I’m just happy to be here and can’t wait for the season to get started.

“There’s a clear strategy and philosophy in the way the team wants to play, and I feel like I can fit right into it.”

Journey

He added: “Every club I’ve been at has taught me something, and I’ve tried to take everything I’ve learned throughout my journey and implement it into my game.

“I enjoy having the ball, driving forward with it and combining with my team-mates. I just want to help the team.”

Leshabela progressed through the Foxes’ academy before signing professional terms with the club.

He went on to make his senior debut as a substitute in a 5-0 Premier League victory over Sheffield United.

Leshabela later gained Football League experience during loan spells with Shrewsbury Town and Crewe Alexandra.
