WANTAWAY: Boreham Wood’s Abdul Abdulmalik

Boreham Wood chairman Danny Hunter says Abdul Abdulmalik can leave the club if their valuation is met – but predicts their star man will still be their player when the transfer window closes on Tuesday night.

The 23-year-old, who has missed the National League promotion hopefuls last two games while he’s not training, released a statement earlier in the week asking to leave.

Non-League’s hottest property following his 17 goals last season, Swedish side Djurgardens have reportedly had a £1.5million fee rejected.

Ambitious Wood have long stated their intent not to sell any of their jewels this summer as they look to win promotion following last season’s play-off final defeat.

Although not naming the club, Wood chief Hunter says Abdulmalik can leave – but only if the full deal meets their valuation.

“For clarity, as far as I’m concerned, the transfer fee is agreed,” said Hunter in his Boston United programme notes that admitted he understood the player’s frustration.

“It’s now simply about reaching agreement on some add-ons based on the buying club’s league and UEFA success while Abdul is at their club.

“There are some appearance add-ons, a simple international clause should Abdul become an international (which would increase his worth tenfold) and a fair sell-on. That’s pretty much the saga/story in a nutshell.

“At the moment, Abdul is refusing to train with us or play, though he is still very much our player and has two years left on his contract.

“My gut feeling is that the buying club might decide not to come back to the table, but of course I might be wrong? If I was a betting man, and I’m not, I would expect, when the transfer window closes, that an unhappy Abdul will still be with us, but what do I know?”

In a statement posted on his Instagram account, Abdulmalik talked of his humble beginnings and wishing to take the chance. He said: “Opportunities like this are rare, especially within the National League where some of the hardest-working talent is overlooked. The game of football is forever changing and decisions are fast-paced.

“There’s no guarantee that the same chances come knocking twice. I owe it to myself and the kids growing up just like me to fight for this one I’ve been offered.

“Moving on from a club is one of the toughest decisions in a footballer’s career. I’m more than grateful for everyone that has been a part of my journey so far.

“Everyone at Boreham Wood FC and the incredible fans have played a massive part. You will always have my respect.

“With this said, I’m ready for the next challenge. I’m ready to prove to myself and those around me that I’m capable of reaching the top.”
