Non-league royalty who could feature on a Monday Night Football-style panel

Since 1970, American football fans in the United States of America have settled in on Monday evenings to watch Monday Night Football. We aren’t talking about Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville discussing all things Premier League football here, but the original Monday Night Football show that essentially inspired Sky Sports’ version. With that in mind, does non-league football deserve something similar?

Sure, DAZN certainly does its best, and the coverage for non-league football connoisseurs is decent enough, but there is an argument to suggest that non-league clubs and fans in general could certainly benefit from a football show that is billed as unmissable. After all, that’s essentially what the NFL’s Monday Night Football package is. It’s sold as the ultimate night of football; fans cook up feasts, they indulge in Monday Night Football betting, and it’s essentially the perfect sporting product to base an entire evening around.

However, while any non-league show certainly wouldn’t garner the same type of interest, it could still be worth exploring. With the bright lights of the Premier League drawing young fans in, a Monday Night Football-style show covering non-league games could be impactful. Non-league royalty needs to be considered when assessing a potential panel, though. Below we share some ideal candidates.

Marc White

A divisive figure, it’s impossible to deny that Marc White’s journey with Dorking Wanderers has been a special one. The club’s owner and manager is aiming to get his side back into the National League this season, having experienced it for two seasons from 2022 to 2024. With his knowledge of the competition, plus his undoubted charisma and the comical value he’d bring to proceedings, the face of Dorking Wanderers would surely be considered by any television network looking to give non-league football the platform it deserves.

Jamie Vardy

This next one’s probably a long shot, but one can dream, right? Jamie Vardy’s story is well documented, and while the former Stocksbridge Park Steels and FC Halifax Town striker has been out of the non-league game for well over a decade, he knows what it takes to get out of it. Currently linked with a move back to England, Leicester City’s Premier League winner would undoubtedly jump at the chance to analyse a level of football he owes a lot to.

Steve Morison

Having shone in the non league game for the likes of Bishop’s Stortford and Stevenage Borough as a player, plus having recently taken charge of Hornchurch and Sutton United as a manager, Steve Morison is a great option here. The former striker has had a wonderful career in the non-league game and is well placed to comment on it.

Terry Brown

After leading Phoenix club AFC Wimbledon to the Football League, plus his extensive experience managing the likes of Hayes and Aldershot Town, Terry Brown is one of the most knowledgeable football professionals associated with the non-league game. While the 74-year-old is getting on a bit, Brown is one of the most likeable former managers who is currently involved in the game, with the former Shots boss now overseeing football operations at the club. Should a Monday Night Football-style panel be up for discussion, then Terry Brown would surely be in the frame.

Luke Garrard

Another manager with a strong reputation, Luke Garrard also has a link to AFC Wimbledon having played under Terry Brown for the club. The Boreham Wood boss knows the National League extensively and also has the personality to fit perfectly into any television setting. For Garrard, combining his management commitments with the occasional panel appearance would undoubtedly work.
