Darlington have confirmed manager Steve Watson has left his role at the National League North club ‘with immediate effect’.
The former Newcastle United, Everton and Aston Villa star took charge of the Quakers midway through the 2023-24 campaign.
His arrival triggered an upturn in fortunes as Watson and his assistant manager Terry Mitchell guided their side away from the relegation zone.
Two mid-table finishes followed over the last two seasons and the Quakers were even in contention for a play-off spot during the final weeks of last season before falling just four points shy of the top seven.

Departure
However, with the departures of some key players, including forward duo Cedric Main and Jack Maskell to AFC Fylde and Barnet respectively, and an ongoing injury crisis, Darlington have struggled to find form during the current campaign.
Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at AFC Telford United left the Quakers second from bottom in the National League North table with only North East rivals Spennymoor Town sitting beneath them.
The two sides will meet at Blackwell Meadows this weekend.
Assistant manager Terry Mitchell, however, will take temporary charge following Watson’s departure, which the club confirmed on Monday evening.

Mutual agreement
A statement released on the club website read: “Darlington Football Club can confirm that Steve Watson will leave his role as first team manager with immediate effect.
“The decision was reached by mutual agreement between the Darlington FC directors and Steve following discussions over the past few days.
“Steve leaves with our gratitude for his leadership, dedication and commitment over nearly three years as first team manager.
“However, the club and Steve have agreed that now is the right time to appoint a new manager to take the club forward.
“We wish Steve every success for the future.
“In the meantime, Terry Mitchell will lead the team as caretaker manager while the club conducts its search for a suitably qualified replacement.
“The position will be advertised shortly.”
