■ A CONTROVERSIAL opening 20 minutes proved decisive as Ramsbottom United saw off 10-man Widnes.
Widnes were convinced they should have had a penalty when Mikey Conlon’s cross struck Tom Kennedy’s arm, but they found themselves behind after 16 minutes when Ben Hampson turned home despite replays showing the ball had gone out of play in the build-up.
Things got worse for Widnes as Ryan Jennings was sent off for a lunge, and Rammy doubled their lead after the half- hour through Mason Fawns.
