Northern Premier League East Division club Heaton Stannington have paid tribute to manager Dean Nicholson after his surprise departure brought an end to one of the most successful managerial reigns in the club’s 116-year history.
Nicholson and assistant manager Andy McBride were named as The Stan’s new management team in June 2021 and guided their side to a historic promotion into the Northern League Division One just under 12 months later with a play-off final win against Tow Law Town.
An eighth placed finish in step 5 followed before more history was created when a third place finish in their second season in Division One led to more play-off glory as Birtley Town and West Auckland Town were swept aside at The Willow Park.
That took The Stan into the Northern Premier League East Division for the first time in their history and twelfth and seventh placed finishes have represented an impressive introduction into life at a higher level.

Nicholson and McBride also led the club to their first ever Northumberland Senior Cup win with a penalty shoot-out win against Morpeth Town at St James Park in May 2025 – although they were unable to retain the trophy after falling to a defeat against Whitley Bay in last year’s final. Last Saturday’s draw at North Ferriby will now go down as the last game of Nicholson’s reign and The Stan committee paid tribute to his work after his exit was confirmed on Thursday evening.
“Dean’s contribution goes far beyond promotions, results and silverware”

A club statement read: “Dean’s contribution goes far beyond promotions, results and silverware. Throughout his time at the Club, he has helped build a competitive, entertaining side, created countless memories for the Stan Army and played an important part in the continued development and ambition of Heaton Stannington FC.
“The Directors would like to place on record their sincere thanks to Dean for his commitment, hard work and dedication over the past five years. His contribution to the Club will not be forgotten, and he leaves with our gratitude and respect for everything he has helped us achieve. He will always be a part of this Club’s recent history, and we wish him every success and happiness in whatever the future holds.
“On behalf of the Directors, our loyal supporters and everyone associated with Heaton Stannington FC, we thank Dean for his service and wish him all the very best for the future.”
Nicholson’s assistant McBride is set to take charge of Saturday’s home game against Bradford Park Avenue and the club have indicated a further statement will be released ‘in due course’.
