Refs must have respect from all

WELL DONE to Editor Alex Narey in calling for a greater understanding of referees (NLP, November 19). Their decisions, even when goal-line technology reaches Step 7, will always cause debate.
Fans, who sometimes little understand the referee’s role, only think they know the rules and prefer to shout and criticise the ref ‘s errors instead of their teams, are not helped by experienced commentators that forget that hand balls have to be deliberate to be awarded and that winning a free-kick or penalty is a modern term based on diving (cheating!).
