■SAMUEL Smart was the Basingstoke hero as he scored a first-half winner.
The visitors started well, Dylan Williams forced Colm McAdden into an excellent save, tipping the forward’s volley over after a well worked free kick.
The hosts found themselves stretched at the back and couldn’t get into a rhythm while Luke Knight and Dion Senbie- Ferris both tested McAdden.
Shane Hollamby also recovered well to deflect Nabil Shariff’s close range effort over the bar.
The Saints had the better of the first half but Basingstoke struck just before the break.
