HISTORIANS at Glossop North End are mourning the death this week of former Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood – and the end of a golden era for the Northern League club.
The Derbyshire town is the smallest to have fielded a club in the top flight of English football having played in a First Division containing Liverpool, Everton and Newcastle in 1899-1900.
Chairman at that time was Samuel Hill-Wood, who made the family fortune by establishing the vast mill nearby.
