RYHOPE CW reached the third round for the first time in their history after a narrow success over 10-man Abbey Hey.
Brad Hird’s 55th minute penalty proved the decider as the hosts saw off the North West Counties League First Division South side.
The Abbey had Rhys Clooney sent off for two bookable offences on the hour.
After a largely cautious first half at Ryhope Recreation Park, the game came alive in the minutes after the break.
Northern League outfit Ryhope came out strongly and won a penalty within ten minutes of the restart.
