CHRISTMAS came early for Widnes in the Halton derby yesterday as a late Jack Bannister goal sent his side back over the Mersey Gateway with all three points from a wholly uneventful and dour game.
There was little to separate the near neighbours throughout the 90 minutes with neither goalkeeper having to make a save of more.
Widnes’ game plan of stopping Runcorn from playing in the final-third worked well, and the visitors shaded the share of threatening positions.
If a goal was ever going to be scored it was certain to be something scrappy.
